I'm in the process of starting something called a 'Capsule Wardrobe'. This is when you choose so many items to be in your wardrobe over a period of, at least, 3months. It's meant to also help you spend less money on clothes, which is something I desperately need stop doing, and then at the end of the three months you can spend a little bit on new clothes for the new season.
But anyway, another blog post will follow explaining how it all works and how I'm doing my 'Capsule Wardrobe'.
However, before we get to the 'Capsule Wardrobe', we need to find our style.
Indie, Bohemian, Chic, Grunge, Classy, Preppy, even a mix of styles.
If I'm being completely honest I just buy things that catch my eye and I feel look good on me and also are pretty comfortable. I never really thought about my style till recently and actually think it's a pretty good idea knowing what your style is.
1. FINDING INSPIRATION
Research is key. Create a pin-board on Pinterest and look for clothing that you like. Hopefully, when you look back at your board you'll see a pattern of clothing that really appeals to you. You could even go on clothing websites and browse through everything and add them to your board. Flicking through Instagram is also a pretty good idea with, again, adding photos to your board.
Try looking up some of your style icons. If you gravitate towards Lauren Conrad's feminine/girly style or Julianne Hough's simple/chic style or even Vanessa Hudgens' Boho-Chic style, then jot down why you love their style and go from there.
2. TAKE INTO ACCOUNT YOUR LIFESTYLE & JOB
What kind of clothes are you going to be wearing every day? What's your jobs uniform requirements? If you work in my kind of job where you get an assigned uniform then this can sometimes be a little easier because all I'm having to worry about are my shoes. Are they comfy? Do I like them? Do they fit with the uniform policy? That's it. But if you work in an office, a shop, if you're dealing with the public, just any job that doesn't have an assigned uniform then you need to think about who you are dealing with and what's appropriate. Casual, Smart-Casual, Smart. However, don't buy clothes for the sake of buying clothes. Keep your style in mind. Go back to your Pinterest Board and if it's all casual then have that style in mind but look at smarter details.
3. BE CONFIDENT
Guys, size doesn't matter. Nobody can see the label on that brand new top you just bought. It shouldn't be about fitting into the smallest piece of clothing we can but it should be about comfort and feeling confident in what you're wearing. We've all taken two sizes of the same piece of clothing into the changing room and secretly prayed that the smaller one fits. But come on, why are we trying to squeeze into something that's going to make us feel uncomfortable in the first place. That won't make you feel confident. If you look and feel confident, people will NOT be looking or thinking about your size.
4. ASK FOR HELP
There is no shame in asking for help. Start with friends. Go shopping with them, grab a few pieces of clothing, try them on and ask your friends what they think. Tell them to be honest.
There are also professionals. A lot of clothing stores have personal shoppers. They're the experts when it comes to this kind of thing. Tell them what you like, what your price range is and they'll happily consult you in finding clothes that match your style.
5. ACCESSORIZE
I'm not really one to do this but accessories really help spruce up an outfit. Adding a statement necklace to jeans and a plain t-shirt. A dainty necklace and a colored band bracelet to a pretty dress. Stacked rings and stud earrings or an ear cuff for a more edgy look. Maybe a pearl necklace for a more polished/classic look. Patterned scarfs are also pretty good statement pieces to add a little edge to any look.
It can take time trying to find your style. Try out different styles if you're really not sure what you like. Mistakes are a huge learning curve (trust me, I've made many mistakes when trying to find my personal style). But remember to research different styles. Try taking a few quizzes online. Some of them can be really helpful.
