Okay okay I know, tanning is not particularly essential to surviving summer, but it helps. I am not one who tans particularly well, not unless I get unbelievably burnt, and even then I think most of the colour comes from all the new freckles that crop up. I'm very British okay!?
Over the past couple of years I have had the odd fling with fake tan but I've never settled into a committed relationship. I think this year we're going to have summer romance and see how that goes before I think about going long term.
Once I found a tanning brand that seemed to work for me I stuck with it. No way am I risking using a different brand and it going horribly wrong! I use a brand called St Moriz (which I'm guessing is a St Tropez knock off), it's pretty inexpensive at around £6 per bottle.
There are two main types of tan that I use (both by St Moriz):
and
The fast tan can either be left on for between 1 and 3 hours depending on how dark a tan you want. I've never left it on for more than an hour. My tactic is to do a couple of coats for one hour so that hopefully any patches I missed the first time I cover the second time.
I find the mousse much easier to apply than lotion as I think it's easier to tell whether it's even or not, it also makes less of a mess!
The normal developing tan develops over 4-6 hours and then stops getting any darker. This means that whenever I use it I put it on at night, wait for it to dry, go to bed and then wash it off in the morning. Not advisable with white sheets as there is some transfer!
To apply the tan I use a generic tanning mitt. I don't stick to a particular brand, just whichever is cheapest or actually there (is it just me or are tanning mitt's never in the place you would expect?).
Before applying tan I use an exfoliating glove over the areas I want to tan to make the area smooth so that the tan applies nicely.
Once I've applied the tan I make sure to wipe off any excess from my knees, elbows and ankle bones to make sure they don't come out way darker than the rest!
The only other tanning product I use is the Dove gradual tan which I sometimes apply after a day in the sun if I don't want to tan but want a light glow.
The best thing about tanning? Washing the guide colour off in the shower. I don't know when it's so satisfying to see all the brown wash off but it really is.
Do you use false tan or any other methods of tanning?
