How-To | Compassion, Sponsoring a Child

As most of you probably know, or have sussed out by now, Kate and I go to church.
Within our church we support a lot of charities and Christian businesses. Which, if I'm being honest, I'd never really paid attention to.
It wasn't till one of the leaders in the church got up to speak about an organization called 'Compassion UK'.
Without me rambling about what Compassion is and what they do, the video below gives a quick two minutes of all that information.

This time, for some reason, I listened. I was completely focussed on what was being said.
We were then showed this video about two girls name Eunice.

After seeing this video I was very determined that I was going to sponsor a child.
And here's how I did it.

Step-One: Take Your Time
It took me at least three months to finally get round to sponsoring a child. I wanted to be sure I was absolutely certain I wanted to do it and also had the sufficient funds going into my bank account each month. I also asked quite a few questions to the woman who spoke about Compassion in front of my church, just to be sure it was definitely for me.
Take your time finding the right child to sponsor.

Step-Two: Choose Your Country
I wasn't fussed AT ALL where my sponsored child came from. I kept the mindset of they all deserve to be sponsored so I'll look into all countries. But if you have a specific country you want them to be from then stick with that.

Step-Three: Choose Your Gender
I knew that I wanted to sponsor a girl to begin with. Mainly because it felt comfortable. I really want to sponsor a second child and think I'd sponsor a boy this time.

Step-Four: Choose Your Age
I wanted to sponsor a child between the ages of 3 and 6. I wanted to be able to see them growing up through Compassion and have a good few years at school learning and meeting new friends.

Step-Five: Read Each Profile Carefully
I focussed more on what their hobbies were. I'm a massive lover of music so it made sense for me to sponsor a child who shared the same interests as me.

Step-Six: Sponsor and Write Letters
Once you've chosen the child you want to sponsor and you're absolutely certain then go for it. Sponsor them. You can write letters to them and they write back. You can send photos and small, flat gifts (Compassion give a list of things you can and can't send your sponsored child).
You may not feel like you're making a difference but honestly, each child is so grateful for your small donation each month and also for the love you send with each letter.

One thing I will say about sponsoring a child is just take your time. When looking through the profiles you know which one to sponsor. It's one of those when you know, you know moments.

Have you thought about sponsoring a child? Do you sponsor a child?
