How-To // Survive Summer - The Clothing

Summer in Scotland can be a relatively elusive thing. There's usually a week in May or June when the summer arrives and the next week it's gone again. People rush out to buy sun cream, BBQ's ice creams and the parks are full of pasty white people desperately trying to get some colour. And then as quickly as it came it's gone again, the very next week people are back in trousers and jumpers and suncream goes to a cupboard somewhere where it's forgotten about. All we have to show for the week of sun are the Instagram pictures and the sunburn.

Last week we had that week of sun and it got me thinking about the things I change when the weather gets hot. My fashion choices change, my make-up changes, my hair changes. For that one week I adapt happily to the sunshine hoping that this time it might stay.

The Clothes
It's always a sad time when I realise that if I go out in my usual black skinnies and black t-shirt with a black cardigan I'm going to melt. I used to think summer meant no more black on black and I spent my time in the sun wearing far more colour than I wanted to and feeling pretty uncomfortable. I've eventually found a middle ground. I have a black maxi skirt, a black maxi dress and a couple of nice black tops.

Something like this top from Primark is perfect, I have one very similar but it's not lacy. It's perfect for tucking into skirts or wearing with shorts or jeans. Obviously for tops like these you also needs to right bra. I for one cannot handle strapless/backless bra's, they are so uncomfortable and I constantly worry they're going to fall down! Instead I either opt for a black bra and just not be bothered by the fact my bra straps are showing or if you're smaller in the boob department then a bandeau bra or top can be perfect for underneath.

Skirts and dresses are something I really enjoy wearing in the summer but with a lack of tights underneath the evil of chaffing emerges. Not fun. But I am pleased to announce that I have a cure to this most painful of ailments, and it doesn't involve talcum powder or dry shampoo. I would like to introduce to you all the idea of The AC Pants. For those not in the know AC stand for Anti-Chaffing (genius I know!). I originally got my AC pants from H&M, they were basically cotton cycling shorts with lace detail and the bottom, and they were perfect. Now I've had a look and they don't seem to have them any more but they do have running shorts which while they might not be quite as nice as the ones with the lace they will still do the job!

Kimonos are another favourite of mine in the summer. Wearing a super boring/plain outfit? Throw a kimono on top and suddenly you look like you've put effort in! Whether you go for a black one like this H&M one or for something more colourful and patterened like this on from Boohoo it's going to look like you put in more effort than if you just wear a strap top and shorts!
