So I really love being busy, I can't stand having days of doing nothing. I just get into a funk and end up being completely unproductive. The more time I have, the less productive I am. But there is a difference between being busy and having the most ridiculous hectic week I can remember.
This week is one of those weeks.
When I have a busy week there are a few things I do to help myself not to get stressed.
So this is Kate's Guide to Surviving A Week of Madness (catchy name I know!)
Planning
Planning each day out is essential for me, I need to physically write it down in order for me to remember what I have to do. I also have it all on my phone calendar so that I get reminders 1 hour before an event or meeting. I use my bullet journal dailies as a way to organise my daily to do's and my weekly spread to know where I need to be when.
Eating on the Go
Something that always gets seriously abandoned when it comes to a busy week is meals. I still eat, but in small unhealthy bursts, not ideal for someone who tries to be healthy (tries being the operative word!)
Today was the perfect example of the awfulness of my diet on a busy day. I first ate at around 12pm when I had two day old dominoes pizza (which tastes as gross as it sounds), the next time I ate was at 7pm when I had two pieces of plain toast which wasn't quite toast or bread but a weird hybrid of the two, it's now 9:30pm and I'm having a can of diet coke. Not ideal, and it's something I am going to try and fix this week.
I know some people bang on about meal prepping as a way to eat healthily when you're busy. Well that's great but I usually finish work at 10pm and I live with my parents so banging around the kitchen at 11pm at night is not ideal and liable to leave me homeless!
My plan is not perfect but I think it will help. The first thing I'm going to do is have an emergency food pack in my bag and car at all times (an exciting meal of an apple and a granola bar) not exciting but better than two day old pizza! I'm also going to buy myself some shakes (probably slim fast), now I know these are not healthy but I figure it's better to drink that than not have anything all day and then eat ice cream. Right?
Looking Okay(ish)
There are a few things I change around when I have a week like this one. While I am not opposed to going out the house in leggings and a jumper sans make-up with my hair scraped back, it's not always appropriate if I'm working.
I wash my hair at night so that it can dry as I sleep and save me time in the morning, usually I sleep with it in a plait or twisted so that it doesn't need much styling the next day. In the morning (unless I need to look professional or smart for some reason) I only wear BB cream and mascara so that I look alive. I pack a small make-up bag that I take with me so that I can change my look if necessary.
In the evening, before bed, I choose my clothes for the next day (and pack any necessary changes) so that I have as little things to do the next morning as possible and can sleep for longer.
Sleeping
Sleep is one of the first things to go when I'm busy, not only because I don't have time but also because I lie awake stressing about the next day and the fact that I've not got enough time to sleep (ridiculous cycle I know!).
This week I am effectively living between 3 houses (I'm house sitting for two families) and sleeping in a different bed every night wrecks my sleeping pattern. I have this amazing ability to hear one creak and turn that into a team of baddies coming to kill me as I sleep.
As soon as it's time for bed I write down everything I need to do the next day, I leave that note next to me so when I jerk awake panicking about forgetting something I can write it down without turning on a light and waking myself up even more. I listen to an audiobook I know really well so that I don't need to listen but can be distracted by my thoughts. I also sleep with my blinds open so that the sun helps me to wake up once my alarm goes off.
Keeping Going
It's very easy for the stress of a busy week to get to me so that by the end of the week I want to curl into a ball and hibernate. There are 3 things I need to keep me going.
1. A kickass playlist I can sing along to - this week I'm favouring my "Oldies" playlist
2. My dressing gown - sounds stupid but if I have my dressing gown it doesn't matter where I'm sleeping I feel a little bit more at home
3. Company - I'm not an extrovert but if I spend a week only seeing people for work it's not good for me. I have to find time to hang out with friends, even if it's for 10 minutes.
