This Is Scotland // WANLOCKHEAD

So it's been a while since I made a "This Is Scotland" post and since I went on a evening road trip this week and took a tonne of pictures I thought I would show some of them to you.

Wanlockhead, as it says on the sign, is the highest village in Scotland. We weren't headed here but when we saw a sign telling us Scotland's highest village was nearby we couldn't resist going to check it out.

By the time we got to Wanlockhead it was around 9pm at night, we didn't want to disturb the residents of this tiny village so we went through the main village to the old mining area. As you can see there are a tonne of gorgeous old dilapidated mining buildings we could explore.

The views all around the village were gorgeous, if it had been earlier on in the day or a less cloudy evening I'm sure the pictures would have been spectacular!

In this picture we decided to climb to the top of the pile of mined shale to see what the view was like. As you can see by the size of our car it was an enormous pile of shale! It was also very slippy to walk up and down and probably very dangerous, but we survived!

This is one of the run down houses which seems to have become the place people leave their marks, I loved the contrast between the rolling hills which were so natural and this man made concrete block.

These tiny stone huts were dotted all around the hills on each side of Wanlockhead, we guessed they were old sheep herder huts but who knows! Either way they looked beautiful perching on the sides of the hills.

From here you can see more clearly the size of the shale pile we climbed up. Tiny compared to the hills but compared to the car we practically climbed a mountain.

We then decided to climb one of the hills behind the shale pile to see if the view from the other side was as nice (it was), it was a total trek and I fell 5 times on the way down but it was worth it for the view!

This is the last picture I took before it got totally dark and the shots got really bad (night time photography is so not my strong point). We illuminated this run down building with the car headlights which gives it a really spooky look!

Have you been anywhere beautiful recently?
Do you know of anywhere in central Scotland that we should go?
