By the title of this post you're probably thinking "what the heck is this all about". No, it's not going to shops that have a height restriction to get in.
This post is a simple guide to shopping for those who are shorter in size than the "average" person.
(I really just thought the title was funny. It's probably not funny)
I'm 5ft2" and sometimes I find shopping extremely hard. I don't have the perfect body (but then who does). I have a large chest, wide hips, broad shoulders, and little legs (with chubby thighs). And yes, I may have just picked out what I think are my flaws but I'm learning to embrace it and love me for who I am - such cheese!
As it can be quite a challenge finding things that fit well for us smaller ladies I feel like some wisdom needs to be imparted. And I, of all people, thought I'd use this platform to impart my knowledge when it comes to shopping.
Shops
Let's start with the basics. A lot of shops cater for us shorter humans. Don't limit yourself. There are petite sections in ALMOST every shop, whether it be on the high street or online. As small as they may be, venture into them (is it ironic that the petite sections in shops are so...petite?). My biggest hard find is getting jeans or trousers with a decent leg length. Some places will sell different leg lengths such as Long, Regular, Short or 32", 30", 28". I can get away with a leg length of 30" but let's be honest, the majority of us all want that 28", which you never seem to find (yes, New Look, I'm looking at you). New Look and Dorothy Perkins are my "go-to" shops for jeans and trousers, and for everything else I just go into any shop and see what I can find.
Style
Look, there will just be some styles that we won't get away with BUT don't let that stop you from trying new styles! Obviously different styles will look better or worse on different body types.
This is what I tend to avoid:
Maxi Dresses - if I'm wearing heels with a maxi dress then yes, I'll wear one but if I want to go to the beach and wear a nice floaty dress? NO! Firstly, maxi dresses don't tend to be made for different heights. It's basically a one length only policy they follow and just make me look stumpy. Plus, no one wants to be constantly tripping over their dress right?
Maxi Skirts - maxi skirts are basically just the same as maxi dresses. I can also never find a top I like that goes with a maxi skirt.
Midi Dresses/Skirts - all midi skirts land below my knee, and anything that lands below my knee makes me look extremely short and stupid. It doesn't even work with heels. And no, just because I'm short doesn't mean that midi skirts are like maxi skirts to me...that's height discrimination.
Crop tops - I think I just have issues with most crop tops. There seems to be a trend with the younger generation in the town I live in where crop tops (more like midriffs) and jeans that hug your hips are a thing. Eh, no, girls stop! It's not cute and no one wants to see your belly or your brand new belly piercing. I can get on board with "longer" crop tops and high waisted jeans, I do this myself but crop tops that reach my belly button or above, it's wrong and makes me look hella stumpy.
Up the knee strapped shoes - come on, the knee length straps of your shoes and your shorts or skirt touching just isn't cute, just picture that for a moment. Plus, it makes you look shorter.
Tailoring
I personally have never been to a tailor but I don't see why we shouldn't go. These are the experts on knowing how something should fit on your body. If you do need something taken in or cut shorter then go to a tailor, unless you're a total pro, then do it yourself.
I always got my mum to take in any trousers that were too long for me but if I bought a cheap tshirt or vest top that was too long I would just cut it myself and wear it as a pyjama top - I don't recommend this if you really love the top.
Hopefully this was a tad useful for all you short girls or there or even guys who are buying for a girl.
Let me know if you have any other short girl problems while shopping.
